Additionally, Google has put out statements that confirm that part of what they “judge” a website by is the use of social media references.

In other words, if multiple Twitter users are mentioning a particular website, then it must be an important site. Subsequently, if many people are liking a Facebook page that leads to a businesses website, it must be important. And, if people from all over are mentioning site on their Facebook page, then wow… that must certainly be an important and relevant site. So Google takes into account all of the social activity going on throughout the web and integrates it into it’s search results.

So, does this mean that every business should have a social network? Yes, pretty much it does. Most businesses and nearly all websites will benefit from a well maintained Twitter account. This account should focus on attracting a network of targeted followers that are tuned into a particular niche. The tweets should focus on relevant and helpful information that has the potential to go viral or at least be perceived as useful.

Most businesses have a Facebook Page. However the majority do not manage the Page correctly and therefore get very limited results. However, even a poorly managed Facebook Page can have excellent SEO value to your site and business. Of course a Facebook Page done properly will not only have a much larger effect on SEO, but will also bring traffic from the Page itself.
